What is osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis leads to the deterioration of cartilage, a flexible connecting tissue that protects joints and bones. As a result of this deterioration, joint mobility dramatically decreases. The joint no longer slides properly and can't absorb shocks effectively, which can result in painful inflammation, limiting mobility even more.

In the worst case n the worst case, the joints might completely lose mobility. Osteoarthritis most commonly affects the hands, knees, and hip joints. However, every joint in the human body runs the risk of developing osteoarthritis. The worst part is that cartilage damage is usually irreversible, which is why osteoarthritis can only be stopped in the early stages. If it is discovered comparatively late, it is generally impossible to heal the affected joints completely.

Healthy joints are the basis for a healthy life. Those who struggle with persistent joint pain avoid integrating physical activity into their routine. And lack of exercise, combined with unhealthy eating habits, can cause obesity. Too much body weight, in turn, leads to various other common diseases, such as high blood pressure or diabetes.

Insufficient physical activity can therefore lead to a vicious circle, both physical and psychological, which is very difficult to break. Conversely, enough physical activity: strengthens the immune system.

  • helps the body regenerate, thus supporting the healing of wounds
  • boosts metabolism
  • support a healthy brain
  • protect the cardiovascular system
  • improves the quality of life

Causes of osteoarthritis

From a medical standpoint, we can divide this disease into primary and secondary osteoarthritis. Primary arthrosis implies the deterioration of cartilage that is due to genetic influences. Secondary arthrosis involves cartilage and joint damage and has an extrinsic origin.

It is the result, for example, of mechanical overload, metabolic disorders, and inflammation. Osteoarthritis is further favored by obesity, bad body posture, hormonal disorders, and nerve damage. While osteoarthritis causes joint pain only when you move or exert pressure on them, arthritis causes the joints to hurt even when resting.

Physicians divide osteoarthritis into 4 stages, which we would like to introduce to you in more detail:

Stage 1 thins out the cartilage layer.

Stage 2 causes the cartilage to be replaced by inferior fibrocartilage.

Stage 3 is characterized by ulceration. Here, the deterioration process is already in a late stage.

Stage 4 dramatically reduces the space between joint and bone. This leaves the joint stiff and, in some cases, immobile.

Symptoms of osteoarthritis

As a rule, the symptoms of osteoarthritis, first and foremost joint pain, appear gradually. Initially, it manifests itself only during exercise, then also as a result of ordinary movements, and finally, even while resting. Consequently, this disease is often diagnosed already at an advanced stage. But to be able to recover completely, a timely diagnosis is required. Therefore, it is advisable to pay attention to possible (even seemingly harmless) warning signs so as to be ready to act immediately.

Below we have summarised the symptoms of osteoarthritis in its different stages:

Stage 1:

Weight-bearing pain: This is generally the first symptom that one experiences. They occur when the affected joints are subjected to pressure. This includes activities that seem harmless at first glance, such as going for a long walk or carrying boxes of books.

Stiff and swelled joints: Stiff joints are a common symptom at this stage. Many describe feeling as if the tendons had shortened. In addition to this, the joints might also swell, which would become even less mobile.

Stage 2:

Movement-evoked pain: This pain usually occurs when you move after a prolonged period of rest. It disappears after a few minutes, only to reappear shortly after. Often it is accompanied by muscle fatigue. The sum of these factors can lead to refraining from specific movements or even adopting a bad posture to prevent pain. In the case of hip osteoarthritis, such an approach can lead to limping.

Rest pain: Anyone who experiences joint pain without moving has already to deal with advanced arthrosis. The pain is often due to an accumulation of fluid, which can lead to inflammation. As a consequence, the joints swell, increasing the pain even more. In particularly severe cases, this can result in joint deformity.

Bone cracking and joint popping: This occurs when the articular cartilage is worn out to the point that the bones rub against each other. It should be noted that the symptoms of osteoarthritis tend to worsen in cold or damp conditions.

Diagnosis of osteoarthritis

First, the doctor will take a detailed patient history, gathering information about the onset and severity of symptoms, past illnesses, and lifestyle habits. A physical examination is also required.

The doctor will usually confirm the diagnosis with X-rays or diagnostic ultrasound of the affected joint. Blood tests might also help rule out other conditions that can cause similar symptoms to osteoarthritis.

Finally, an MRI may be performed to determine how worn out the articular cartilage is.

CBD for osteoarthrosis

The mechanism of action and the positive effects of CBD are wide-ranging. On our website, we have already explained how CBD can help lower blood pressure, lose weight, and sleep better.

Basically, cannabidiol acts through its interaction with the body's own endocannabinoid system (ECS). The cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2, which the ECS is composed of, are part of our nervous system and influence, among other processes, anti-inflammatory response and pain perception.

CBD has been shown to support the body's reaction to inflammation, thus relieving joint pain and stiffness.

This is possible thanks to the following mechanism of action:

  • Apoptosis reduces the number of activated T cells
  • Upregulation of FoxP3+ T cells
  • Suppression of cytokines and chemokines in the inflammation site

This makes CBD particularly attractive for osteoarthritis patients because joint inflammation is known to cause pain and lead to joint immobility. But also researchers increasingly turn their attention to CBD as an option to manage osteoarthritis.

A growing number of studies highlights CBD's potential and ensures that many physicians employ CBD for osteoarthritis and recommend this valuable plant compound to their patients. It can be assumed that CBD can help with arthritis and rheumatism in the same way.

Those who want to take CBD for osteoarthritis and have no experience with cannabidiol should opt for CBD capsules or CBD oil. Both allow individual dosage and fit perfectly into everyday life. CBD oil is very easy to take, and you can individually adjust the dosage at any time. CBD capsules are even easier to take, but they do not allow for fine adjustment of the dosage.

In addition, it takes a little more time for the gastrointestinal tract to absorb the active ingredient. Because osteoarthritis affects a large part of the population, researchers have dedicated lots of energy to finding remedies. Especially in the early stages, many symptoms can be alleviated or even prevented.

In the final stage, only a few people manage to do without medicines. Nevertheless, dietary supplements and herbal active ingredients can help alleviate pain in a natural way. Many users report that they have been able to reduce their intake of medication by using natural remedies.

The following supplements can help with osteoarthritis and arthritis:

Chondroitin and glucosamine, which are components of cartilage tissue.

  • Boswellia Serrata, also known as frankincense.
  • Curcumin and fish oil, which have anti-inflammatory effects.
  • Type-2 collagen, which makes up 80-90% of the total collagen in cartilage.
  • CBD (cannabidiol), which can help with osteoarthritis through multiple mechanisms of action.

Typically, doctors recommend therapeutic exercise for osteoarthritis. In addition to it, many also prescribe medication. For example, anti-rheumatic drugs for pain and inflammation or painkillers such as opiates. But also muscle-relaxing compounds like cortisone are often employed.

Conventional medicines often cause side effects, which in turn have to be treated with other medicines. For many people, this becomes a vicious circle. CBD can support the body's reaction to arthritis and osteoarthritis without causing serious side effects.

In addition to medication, many orthopedic surgeons also employ physiotherapeutic instruments, such as shoe lifts, bandages, or walking aids. In particularly severe cases, surgery and a resulting artificial joint are required. CBD ointments can be rubbed on the affected areasandd thus support the disease course.

Benefits of CBD for osteoarthritis

One significant benefit of CBD for osteoarthritis is its ability to support a healthy anti-inflammatory response. This happens thanks to its interaction with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a network of receptors that contributes to regulating the response to inflammation, pain, as well as other physiological processes.

CBD can also keep osteoarthritis-related pain at bay. Again, its interaction with the ECS is fundamental. Consequently, cannabidiol is a promising option for people who are faced with joint pain and stiffness.

Finally, CBD does not cause dependence or serious side effects, unlike many conventional medications. CBD is considered extremely safe and very well tolerated and is also one hundred percent natural.

How to take CBD for osteoarthrosis

CBD products are available in different forms with numerous compositions and concentrations. Which CBD product is the best for osteoarthritis? And what is the optimal dosage?

First, we will give you an overview of the CBD products available in our shop:

  • CBD oil - the classic, in the form of drops or spray

  • CBD capsules - small capsules that are swallowed with water

  • CBD cream - can be applied directly to the skin

Dosage of CBD for osteoarthrosis

Unfortunately, it is impossible to make a general statement about the optimal dosage of CBD for osteoarthritis. On the one hand, CBD has a different effect on each person. On the other, the stage of the disease and the pain perceived also varies from person to person.

While some people feel an effect with just a few drops of 10% CBD oil, others need significantly more to experience the same.

If you intend to use CBD for osteoarthritis, we at enecta recommend starting in the lower range of the standard dosage: between 10 mg and 100 mg of CBD per day. Ideally, you should stick to the selected dosage for a few days because it can take some time for the effect to become noticeable.

If you were to use 10% CBD oil, you would take between 6 and 60 drops daily. It is best to start with a low dosage and gradually increase it if required.

We are happy to provide you with an overview of the average CBD content per drop:

5 % CBD oil contains 1.7 mg CBD per drop.

10 % CBD oil contains 3.4 mg CBD per drop

15 % CBD oil contains 5.1 mg per drop

20 % CBD oil contains 6.8 mg CBD per drop Factors influencing CBD dosage for osteoarthritis

The dosage of CBD depends on various factors, which we would like to explain in more detail in the following section.

Body size and weight: the taller and heavier the person, the more CBD is necessary to achieve the desired effect.

Aim: Those who take CBD exclusively to fend off daily stress tend to get along with a low dosage. Those who take CBD for severe, chronic pain are likely to need a higher dosage.

Experience: In order to choose the best possible dosage, you'll need a little experience. After you start taking CBD, we recommend observing your body's reaction closely.

Individual metabolism: Every one of us reacts differently to CBD. Get to your feel-good dosage slowly, step by step. Donìt be impatient and listen to your body's response.

Side effects of CBD for osteoarthritis

It is very rare that people do not tolerate cannabidiol. Nevertheless, CBD is not entirely free of side effects. Serious or even life-threatening side effects can be ruled out, though. Compared to conventional medicines, CBD can definitely be considered a safe option.

Known side effects of CBD are:

  • Fatigue
  • Dry mouth
  • Temporary low blood pressure
  • Loss of appetite

If you are taking prescription drugs, you should discuss the intake of CBD products with your doctor.

CBD for osteoarthrosis testimonials

Although many studies are being published, scientific research on this topic is still scarce. All the more valuable are the many testimonials from people who have used CBD to manage osteoarthrosis. The verdict is overwhelmingly positive. Some report significant relief from pain and inflammation.

Others have experienced improved mobility and flexibility of the affected joint. The testimonials also indicate that people particularly benefit from CBD when they use it in conjunction with therapeutic exercise. The advantage, one reads, is also that the intake of CBD puts the body in the optimal condition to benefit from such practices.

CBD for osteoarthrosis: Questions and answers

CBD is on everyone's lips and can be used in many ways. Because science has only recently started to look at cannabidiol in more detail, we can expect many other possible applications. The cannabinoids of hemp and cannabis (e.g., THC, CBD, or CBN) have been known for decades.

However, the medical use of hemp is still uncharted territory, even for medical practitioners. It is, therefore, only natural that many questions arise. In this section, we've tried to answer the most frequently asked questions on this topic. If your question is not included, feel free to get in touch with our customer service.

CBD interacts with the body's own endocannabinoid system and binds to receptors that are responsible for anti-inflammatory response and pain perception. This interaction contributes to the good functioning of many physiological processes. Many studies highlight cannabidiol's analgesic and anti-inflammatory potential.

However, CBD is not a medicine and does not replace prescribed drug therapies. Cannabidiol is instead to be described as a supporting plant compound. If you are taking medication for arthritis, you should discuss the use of CBD with a doctor beforehand.

Both CBD oil and CBD capsules can fit seamlessly into everyday life. CBD oil is administered through a dropper. The oil is dropped under the tongue and kept there for about 60 seconds. CBD oil can be dosed individually, and the oral mucosa absorbs it very quickly.

Unlike capsules, however, CBD oil is not always convenient to take. Capsules are handy to carry around, and you can take them everywhere with a gulp of water. The drawback is that capsules allow a less flexible dosage and take longer to be absorbed. When it comes to the mechanism of action, oils and capsules are identical.

The longer, the better. As already explained, CBD can be particularly beneficial when you consume it regularly. Since there is no risk of addiction, long-term use of CBD doesn't pose any problems.

It is unfortunately not possible to recommend a CBD dosage that can help everyone right away. The fact is that CBD affects everybody differently. Our recommendations are therefore based exclusively on the experience reports of users.

If you take CBD for mild complaints, you can get by with just a few drops a day. If you use CBD for severe chronic disorders, a higher dosage seems only logical. However, the optimal dosage also depends on body size and metabolism. If the desired effect does not occur, you can increase the dose without any problems.

As with the dosage, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. The speed at which the beneficial effects of CBD kick in depends on many factors, such as the dosage, the severity of the symptoms, and the way the body responds.

Some users report that it took a week. According to others, pain relief can be experienced right away. What is certain is that regular use over a prolonged period of time is the best way to benefit fully from the properties of cannabidiol.

CBD interacts with the body's endocannabinoid system and can thus influence pain perception. Accordingly, it can be a promising alternative for people with osteoarthritis experiencing pain.

For example, a 2018 study found that CBD can relieve inflammation and reduce pain linked to osteoarthritis without causing significant side effects. And that is probably the biggest advantage of CBD.

Unlike conventional painkillers, this natural active ingredient is known to be extremely well-tolerated.
