Hemp Seed oil otherwise referred to as 'hemp oil' is manufactured by cold-pressing hemp seeds. Many brands of hemp oil are unrefined. The oil has a clear green colour and provides a nutty flavour when consumed orally.
Hemp oil is completely different from cannabidiol (CBD), which is extracted from the cannabis plant and uses hemp leaves and flowers during its production process.
Hemp oil is created using the hemp seed itself and rarely contains any THC, the psychoactive component responsible for the high associated with recreational cannabis use. That said, this information has been widely disputed. CBD oil can sometimes contain incredibly low levels of THC.
Hemp oil provides several health benefits, especially when it comes to improving your skin. This is due to the moisturising qualities and enriching vitamins that hemp oil naturally contains.
How is Hemp Oil Beneficial to the Skin?
Whether hemp oil is consumed or used topically, there are several skincare benefits that this natural product offers.
Soothes Inflammation and Moisturises
Hemp oil contains an omega-6 fatty acid known as gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) which can act as a potent anti-inflammatory while encouraging the regeneration of skin cells and encouraging skin growth.
This can provide relief from irritation or inflammation of the skin and can help to ease conditions such as acne and psoriasis. At the same time, hemp oil works to nourish the skin and keep it looking fresh and moisturised.
Moderates the Production of Oil
Hemp oil works perfectly for the majority of skin types as it moisturises without clogging the pores. It can also help to balance oily skin, providing hydration, while regulating the skin's natural oil production.
When your skin is dry, it tends to overproduce oil, which can aggravate conditions such as acne. Hemp oil is known to reduce acne caused by excessive levels of oil by preventing dry skin without clogging up your pores.
Provides Anti-Aging Properties
On top of soothing and adding moisture to the skin, hemp oil can provide anti-ageing properties.
The elixir can slow down the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines while preventing some of the signs of ageing from developing,
Both oleic and linoleic acids found naturally in hemp oil play a vital role in anti-ageing and skin health.
Neither of these acids are produced naturally by the body, so they are essential nutrients in addition to a balanced diet.
Hemp Oil Could Help to Treat Atopic Dermatitis
One of the reasons that hemp seed oil is so beneficial is the fact that it's packed with omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. When these nutrients are consumed, they can help to alleviate skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis.
A 2005 randomised study found evidence that dietary hemp seed oil helped to reduce both the appearance and symptoms of clinical atopic dermatitis after five months.
How to use Hemp Oil
There are various methods you can apply to utilise the skin benefits that hemp oil offers.
Using Hemp Oil Topically
One method is to apply hemp oil onto your skin directly. This can help to calm irritation or soothe dry patches of skin with a rapid positive effect.
As with all skin products, we recommend trying a patch test before applying the oil liberally. This will help to determine whether or not you are likely to develop an unwanted reaction.
To undertake a patch test, you should:
- Wash and dry a small patch of skin on your upper arm.
- Apply a tiny amount of your pure hemp oil product to this area.
- Cover the area with a plaster or bandage, making sure that this covering remains in place for 24 hours and taking precautions to keep the area dry.
- If any itching, burning, irritation, or redness occurs, it's a sign that you are sensitive to the hemp oil product and you should avoid using it. If you develop a severe reaction, take off the covering immediately, and wash the area thoroughly with soap and water.
- If there is no visible reaction, it's safe to assume that you are not allergic to the hemp oil product and it can be used safely.
For those of you who want to use hemp oil as a treatment for acne, the oil should be applied topically, left on clean skin for up to two minutes, then washed off with warm water.
